We all remember how Jak in TPL couldn't speak, right? Jak could sigh, Jak could laugh, Jak could say 'ouch' but not talk.I believe this is due to damage to a section of the brain called "Broca's Area".

Broca's Area deals with speech motor and vocal output. A traumatic injury to this area would leave the person still understanding words, and communicating, but not speaking.

"Damage to this area... causes inability to say words properly. You know what you want to say, but you can't vocalize the words." -(Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology, 238)

"Depending on the severity of the lesion to Broca's area, the symptoms can range from the mildest type (cortical dysarthria) with intact comprehension and the ability to communicate through writing to a complete loss of speaking out loud." ([link])

"It contains the motor speech area and controls movements of tongue, lips, and vocal cords. Loss of speech may follow hemorrhage into this area."-([link])

Now I can hear people wondering aloud how Jak got mild brain damage back under control? Dark eco, chaos in a semi-liquid gaseous form. With it, anything is possible :3
